Make a Potty Trowel Mk 5 (36g)

Background

After the Mk1,2, 3 and 4 and after loosing the Mk3 and finding the Mk4 too small I thought that I could tweak the design to improve performance a little. I wanted a larger handle and I wanted the handle to be not used as a digging implement as well.

Design Features

I've changed the digging end to be more pointed and made the handle more like a handle.

Materials

  • 40cm of 25x10x1.5mm L shaped aluminium.
  • 6 or more rivets (3mm or 1/8" are fine)

Construction

Construction is straightforward.

  • Cut the L-shaped pieces to 20cm
  • Clamp them back to back and cut the front and rear diagonals and the handle horizontal. The handle is roughly 10mm deep.
  • Clamp and drill a rivet hole at one end of the trowel
  • Rivet it.
  • Clamp, drill and rivet at the other end of the trowel.
  • Repeat for four more rivets equally spaced.
  • Round off any edges.

How to Use

It's more of a trenching tool than a trowel. Use it by pulling towards you rather than digging away from.

Field Testing

It's tough enough.

Extras

I've created a small pouch in Red PU Nylon which has a cordura resting place for the point - I don't want it to damage my pack.
