Ultralight Waterproof Kilt / Skirt (£5 / 87g)

I had been thinking a lot about waterproofs for prolonged rain (English summer) and what I actually needed my waterproofs to do from a purely functional perspective.

I concluded that from a purely practical viewpoint it was vital that my thigh muscles remain warm and dry even in the wettest of weathers. If they become cold and wet they cease to function efficiently and I can no longer walk quickly.

I have also been studying medieval clothing looking for inspiration. My theory was that clothing from the earlier centuries had to be functional and had to be simple to manufacture - making it ideal for home manufacture today. The fact that I am a straight guy did still however make me hesitate over something that looked like a skirt...

This waterproof skirt is very simple. It is a Knee-length A-line skirt with an elasticated waistband that is made from Silicone Coated Nylon (SilNylon)

After 5 days of extensive testing in the rain I can say that it is the best piece of waterproof kit that I have ever owned. I plan to create a second version RSN and combine it with a set of waterproof chaps to create a whole ultralight outfit that actually works better than the heavyweight alternatives.

I have made this based on my own measurements (see below).

It is basically a single 127cm width of Silnylon fabric with a height of 80cm. into the back of which I have inserted a 35cm dart (to create an A-line).

The hem has been finished using a rolled-hem (although it could be hand finished or left unfinished).

The topmost edge has been folded and stitched to create a tunnel into which some 5mm elastic has been inserted.

The dimensions have been calculated as follows:

Width - the widest point around my hips /thighs + 10cm for ease.

Height - the distance from my waist to my knees + 15cm for coverage and seams.

Dart - This allows for my natural stride. I have long legs so 35-40cm should be fine for most people.

Mark 2 Kilt / Skirt

For the next version I am going to make it more like a Kilt or a Sarong - as a single 'square' piece of fabric with press-stud fastenings at the top and bottom. This then gives me a nice piece of fabric that can also be used as a groundsheet for the front of the tarp.

The Mk2 Waterproof Kilt is slightly heavier than the Mk1 but is much more versatile for English weather.
