Make your own Ranger Beads (2g)

In theory it is very simple - string some beads onto a piece of cord and you are done. In practice finding beads and cord that work together can be tricky. I'll explain how to make some 'real' ones and then I'll show you how to make some ultralight ones.

To Make 'Real' Ranger Beads

For this you will need:

  • 0.5m of para cord (with the central core removed)
  • 13 beads (in black ;-) )
  • A darning needle (probably)

The best place to find a cheap source of beads is to go to a pound/thrift shop and buy a £1 bead necklace or bead bracelet etc - but make sure that the beads are strung and not moulded onto the thread.

The cord that you use must be compressible so that the bead will be gripped when threaded but can still be moved up and down the thread. For details of how to thread it see below.

I did spend some time looking for Cords and beads that would work together but did not succeed in my local stores. Another alternative would be to use cord locks (like you find on any coat) but that would be heavy and expensive.

To Make Ultralight Ranger Beads

For this you will need:

  • One Children's bead bracelet kit (soft foam beads)
  • One 0.5 length of 4mm para
  • One darning needle

Instructions

1. Tie a single loop knot into the end of the doubled up para-cord.

2. Use a piece of cotton to tie the darning needle to the other end of the para cord (see images). The important thing is to stagger the para cord along the needle so that the two parts of the cord do not form a single large point.

3. String nine beads onto the para cord.

4. Tie a knot about 2-3cm from the last bead.

5. Thread 4 more beads onto the cord. (I have used different beads).

5. Tie a knot about 2-3 cm from the last set of beads.

6. Tie a final knot around 6cm from the last knot

7. Unbind or cut off the darning needle.

Note: I have used brightly coloured beads because that is what I could find and it makes for an easier illustration.

You can read about how to use the beads here.
